Batawa Ski Hill: Ontario’s Best-Kept Mountain Biking Secret

Nestled in the scenic hills of Batawa, Ontario, Batawa Ski Hill has evolved from a community-built ski area into a multi-season recreational paradise. Today, it boasts one of Ontario’s most charming and accessible mountain biking trail systems — and it all started with a vision, a shoe factory, and a lot of heart.

We caught up with AJ, who manages the hill and its evolving trail network, to hear the incredible backstory behind Batawa Ski Hill’s transformation into a mountain biking destination.

A Legacy Rooted in Community

Batawa Ski Hill, a not-for-profit ski hill in Ontario, was originally constructed by volunteers from the nearby Bata Shoe Factory,. The hill has remained a community-first facility from day one.

“Mrs. Bata, who has passed now, always wanted to keep the trail system free and accessible,” AJ shares. “That was part of her legacy — to keep this beautiful land open for everyone to enjoy.”

And it truly is expansive — over 1,500 acres of forested terrain with hiking, snowshoeing, and cycling trails winding through.

From Rogue Trails to Sanctioned Riding

Long before any official trails existed, adventurous mountain bikers were building unsanctioned features on what’s now known as the north side of the property — think tall ladders, massive drops, and road gaps.

It wasn’t until 2017–2018, thanks to a Canada 150 grant, that the current trail system began to take shape. With funding secured, Transitions Bike Parks came in and built a series of machine-cut trails on the south side — bringing gravity-fed fun to the region.

“These aren’t your average Ontario XC trails,” AJ says. “There’s real flow, elevation, and challenge here — like a mini-Enduro park.”

How the Trail Network Grew: Enter Quinte MTB

After the trails were cut, maintenance quickly became a concern. Brush overgrowth and general wear led AJ to reach out to Quinte Mountain Bike Club, a local group on the verge of folding due to complicated land access at another location.

The stars aligned. Over the next year, Quinte MTB incorporated and presented a trail stewardship proposal to Batawa Development Corp. (BDC). “It took a year of back and forth with lawyers,” AJ recalls, “but we signed the agreement — and that was huge.”

Expanding the System: Wild Turkey & North Side Revival

With trail stewardship secured, the next goal was building a new singletrack trail. Enter Wild Turkey, the first club-built trail that introduced a tighter, more technical style to the south side.

Then, during the pandemic, with time and volunteer energy at an all-time high, the club revived the north side, transforming it into a legit network complete with a climb trail, jump line, and flowing descents.

“Now we have two zones,” AJ explains. “The south side is great for beginners and mixed groups. The north side is more advanced — the climb trail filters out the casual crowd.”

Free Trails, Thanks to a Legacy of Accessibility

One of the most incredible aspects of Tawa Ski Hill mountain biking? It’s completely free.

“This goes back to Mrs. Bata’s wishes,” AJ explains. “We’re a not-for-profit, and the goal is accessibility for everyone.”

The trails welcome hikers, bikers, and even snowshoers in the winter months. While most of the snow on the ski hill is manmade, many trails remain walkable year-round.

If you’re looking to support the trails, Quinte MTB accepts donations — 100% of which go directly into maintenance and development.

Building Community: Weekly Rides, Coaching & the Chalet Vibe

Local shop Doug’s Bikes in Belleville partnered with Batawa Ski Hill  to host weekly social rides, bringing out 15–20 riders weekly — many of them new to the sport.

“There’s been such great energy,” AJ says. “So many new faces, and finally, we can justify opening the chalet after rides for beer, burgers, and poutine.”

It’s more than food and drinks — it’s a space for riders to share tips, chat about gear, and build friendships.

Plus, certified PMBIA coach Tammy Stanton from Kingston has offered intro-level clinics on site — and they sell out fast.

Facilities for Families: Pump Track & Dino Dig

Batawa Ski Hill isn’t just for hardcore riders. With a pump track, dino dig area, and gentle terrain, it’s the perfect destination for families with kids of varying abilities.

“Parents can ride while their kids play, or ride together. There’s something here for everyone,” says AJ.
